Word of the Week: “Raw Cable Flex Life”

Published: 09/22/2016

Q: What is raw cable flex life?

A: Raw cable flex life defines the durability of a cable to survive flexing as it’s being used. An optimal cable flex life depends on the cable’s design – for example, a durable, reusable surgical cable may have 500,000 flex cycles. Using a standard, tick-tock test the cable is flexed at a defined rate, tension weight, and angle over a rod of a known diameter. By flexing the cable over a set radius or stress point, you monitor resistance of conductors within the cable, ad the condition of the outer jacket.
